Scope and Delimitation of the Study: Examples and How to Write It (2026)
The scope and delimitation section is the part of Chapter 1 where you draw the fence around your study and explain why the fence is where it is. Committees read it to check two things: that the study is small enough to finish, and that every boundary was chosen for a reason rather than by accident. This guide explains how to write the scope and delimitation of the study, gives eight complete examples across disciplines, and supplies a template that produces the justification sentence most students leave out.
The scope states what the study covers: the topic and variables, the population, the setting, the time frame and the methods. The delimitations are the boundaries you deliberately set within that scope, each with a reason. Regent University’s dissertation guidelines describe delimitations as “factors that affect the study over which the researcher generally does have some degree of control,” which is what separates them from limitations, the factors you cannot control. A good section is 150 to 400 words, written as prose, with every boundary paired with a justification.
Scope, Delimitations, Limitations and Assumptions: The Difference
Four words that get confused in almost every first draft:

The practical test is a single question: could you have chosen otherwise? If yes, it is a delimitation and belongs here. If no, it is a limitation and belongs in the limitations section. Regent’s guidelines note that many dissertations fold the two together under one heading; that is acceptable only if each item is still labelled correctly.
The Six Boundaries Every Scope Must Set
Whatever the discipline, a complete scope answers six questions. Most examiners will look for each one and notice the one you skipped.
- Topic and variables: which concepts are in, and which adjacent concepts are out.
- Population: who or what is studied, with the inclusion criteria stated.
- Setting: the sites, region or organisation, and why those.
- Time frame: the period of data collection or the period the data describe.
- Design and instruments: the approach and measures, in one sentence; the full justification belongs in the methodology chapter.
- Perspective: whose viewpoint is captured (students but not teachers; patients but not clinicians) and why.
Each boundary then gets a delimitation sentence with a reason. The reasons that committees accept are feasibility (time, access, cost), focus (the research question does not need it), comparability (mixing units would confound the comparison) and ethics (a group is excluded to avoid harm or because consent could not be obtained appropriately).
Eight Scope and Delimitation Examples by Discipline
Each example is written as it would appear in Chapter 1. The boundary and its justification are kept in the same sentence, which is the habit that makes this section read as deliberate rather than defensive.
1. Nursing (MSN, United States)
This study examines adherence to the pressure-injury prevention bundle among registered nurses on the four adult medical-surgical units of one community hospital during a twelve-week period in autumn 2026. It is delimited to medical-surgical units because intensive-care and paediatric units use different risk-assessment tools, which would make adherence scores non-comparable. It is delimited to registered nurses rather than the full care team because bundle documentation is a registered-nurse responsibility under the hospital’s policy. The study measures documented adherence only; it does not assess pressure-injury incidence, which would require a longer follow-up than the project timeline allows.
2. Education (MEd, Canada)
The study is delimited to six Grade 4 teachers in one Ontario public school board who volunteered after a board-wide invitation. Grade 4 was chosen because it is the first year in which the provincial mathematics curriculum introduces the strands most often used for Indigenous-perspective integration. A single board was chosen so that all participants work under the same professional-development programme, allowing differences in practice to be attributed to the teacher rather than to the board. The study captures teachers’ planning and enactment; it does not assess student outcomes, and it does not include French-immersion classrooms, where instructional materials differ.
3. Business and Management (MBA, Australia)
The scope of this study is the relationship between hybrid working days and work engagement among employees of three mid-sized accounting firms in Sydney, surveyed in a single wave in early 2026. The study is delimited to firms with between 100 and 500 staff because hybrid policy in larger firms is set at partner-group level and would introduce a second decision-maker into the model. It is delimited to employees below partner level because partners set their own working patterns. Engagement is measured with a single validated scale; the study does not measure productivity or client outcomes.
4. Psychology (MSc, United Kingdom)
This study is delimited to final-year undergraduates at one UK university who are enrolled on a dissertation module in the 2025 to 2026 academic year. Final-year students were chosen because the intervention targets dissertation-related anxiety specifically; earlier years would dilute the effect of interest. Students already receiving psychological treatment are excluded, on ethical advice, so that the intervention does not interact with ongoing care. The design is a two-arm waitlist-controlled trial with a two-week intervention window and a single post-test, which is sufficient to test the immediate effect but not its persistence.
5. Computer Science (MS, United States)
The evaluation covers unit tests generated by two open-weight language models for twenty open-source Python repositories selected from a public benchmark suite. The scope is delimited to Python because the mutation-testing tool used supports Python only, and to repositories with at least 80 percent developer-written line coverage so that the comparison baseline is meaningful. Proprietary models are excluded because their outputs cannot be reproduced at a fixed version. The study measures mutation score and test-suite size; it does not measure readability or maintainability of the generated tests.
6. Public Health (MPH, United Kingdom)
The analysis uses anonymised booking and attendance records for the health-check programme of one English local authority across two financial years, 2024 to 2025 and 2025 to 2026. The scope is delimited to residents in the most and least deprived quintiles of the authority’s index of deprivation, because the research question concerns the gap between the extremes rather than the gradient across all five. General practices that joined the programme after the start of the first year are excluded so that both years are observed for every practice. The study describes where uptake is lost; it does not test interventions.
7. Engineering (MASc, Canada)
The field study is delimited to twelve detached houses in Winnipeg retrofitted with cold-climate air-source heat pumps in the two years before the study, monitored for one heating season. Detached houses were chosen because they are the dominant housing type in the rebate programme and because shared walls in attached housing would confound the heat-loss calculation. Houses with supplementary wood or gas heating were excluded so that measured performance is attributable to the heat pump. The study compares measured seasonal performance with rated values; it does not model economic payback.
8. Social Work (MSW, United States)
This qualitative study is delimited to unlicensed kinship caregivers in one Midwestern county who have cared for a related child for at least six months. The six-month threshold was set so that participants can speak to sustaining a placement rather than only to its start. Licensed kinship caregivers are excluded because they have access to agency training and stipends that are the comparison point for the study. The study captures the caregiver’s own account through interviews; it does not include the child’s perspective or agency staff, each of which would require a separate ethical approval.

The scope must match the response move of your problem statement and the population named in your hypotheses. If the three disagree, the committee will find the mismatch before you do. Where the Section Goes
US dissertation templates usually give the section its own heading in Chapter 1, after the significance of the study and before or beside the definition of terms; Regent’s guidelines list “Delimitations” as an optional Chapter 1 heading and note that it may be merged with limitations. UK and Australian theses more often carry the scope inside the introduction and the delimitations at the start of the methodology chapter. Whichever your programme uses, the content is the same, and the aims and objectives should be readable as the inside of the fence you have just drawn.
Five Mistakes Committees Flag
- Boundaries without reasons. “The study is limited to one hospital” tells the committee nothing. “The study is delimited to one hospital because the bundle policy is hospital-specific” is a delimitation.
- Limitations dressed as delimitations. A small sample you could not enlarge is a limitation. Listing it here implies you chose it, which invites the question why.
- A scope wider than the data. If the scope says “Canadian teachers” and the sample is one Ontario board, the scope is wrong. Write the scope to the sample you actually have.
- A bullet list with no prose. Some Filipino and US undergraduate templates accept a list; most master’s and doctoral committees expect paragraphs that argue for each boundary.
- Apologising. Delimitations are design decisions, not confessions. State them in the declarative and move on; the sampling logic behind them is explained in our guide to sampling methods in research.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should the scope and delimitation section be?
Between 150 and 400 words for a master’s thesis, sometimes up to a page for a doctoral dissertation with several sites or populations. Each of the eight examples above is 100 to 130 words and covers population, setting, time frame, design and at least one exclusion.
Is “scope and limitation” the same as “scope and delimitation”?
No, although some templates use the words loosely. Delimitations are boundaries you chose; limitations are weaknesses you could not remove. If your handbook says “scope and limitation,” write the delimitations in that section and keep the true limitations for the discussion chapter, or ask your supervisor which is meant.
Do qualitative studies need delimitations?
Yes. Qualitative delimitations usually concern whose perspective is captured, the setting, the time period and the inclusion criteria for participants, as in examples 2 and 8. The reasons are often about depth and access rather than comparability.
Should I list variables I excluded?
List the ones a reader would expect and wonder about. If your study of engagement does not measure productivity, say so and give the reason. Do not list every conceivable variable; that reads as padding.
Can delimitations change after data collection?
They can, when access or ethics force a change. Report the final delimitations in Chapter 1 and explain the change in the methodology chapter. Do not leave the original scope standing if the study no longer matches it.
Where do assumptions go?
Many US templates include an “Assumptions” subsection in Chapter 1 beside the delimitations. Keep it short: two to four statements you take as true and do not test, such as honest self-report, with a sentence on why each is reasonable.
