Thesis vs Dissertation by Country: 8 Systems Compared (2026)
Your supervisor in Kuala Lumpur asks for a dissertation, a friend at a US graduate school is finishing a thesis, and a cousin in Johannesburg is writing a mini-dissertation. All three are master’s students. The labels clash because each higher education system inherited its own vocabulary, so thesis vs dissertation by country is a real question with real consequences: the word on your title page, the template you download and the examination you face all follow from it.
This guide compares eight English-medium systems side by side: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Nigeria, South Africa, the Philippines and Malaysia. Each section cites the regulator or university regulation behind it and points to a deeper local resource when you need one.
Quick answer: In the US, master’s students write a thesis and doctoral students write a dissertation. The UK, Nigeria and South Africa reverse that: the doctorate ends in a thesis, while master’s work is usually a dissertation (South Africa adds the mini-dissertation), and India’s national rules also call the PhD document a thesis. Malaysia names the document after the programme mode (project report, dissertation or thesis), the University of the Philippines uses thesis for bachelor’s and master’s work and dissertation for the PhD, and Canada varies by university.
Thesis vs dissertation by country: the comparison table
The table summarizes what each system calls the main research document at each level and how the doctorate is examined. It reflects the national framework or the named university regulation cited in each section; your own department’s handbook always has the final word.
| Country | Master’s document | Doctoral document | How the doctorate is examined |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Thesis | Dissertation | Committee approval after a final examination or defense |
| United Kingdom | Dissertation (taught); dissertation or thesis (research) | Thesis | Closed viva with at least one external examiner |
| Canada | Thesis | Dissertation at some universities, thesis at others | Final oral defence (for example at McGill) |
| India | Set by each university | Thesis | Two external examiners, then an open viva-voce |
| Nigeria | Dissertation (academic); long essay or project (professional) | Thesis | Internal and external examination |
| South Africa | Dissertation or mini-dissertation | Thesis | Assessment and acceptance of the thesis |
| Philippines | Thesis | Dissertation | Defense before a committee that signs the final copy |
| Malaysia | Project report, dissertation or thesis, by mode | Thesis | Set by each university |
If you study in continental Europe or Australia, those systems are covered in our earlier country guide to the thesis vs dissertation difference, which also includes Germany, France, Spain and the Netherlands.
United States: a thesis for the master’s, a dissertation for the PhD
American graduate schools typically keep the two words apart. The University of Washington Graduate School, for example, publishes separate templates for a Master’s Thesis Title Page and a Doctoral Dissertation Title Page, routes the approvals differently (a supervisory committee form for master’s students, online approval by the reading committee for doctoral students) and warns students not to use the PhD dissertation template for a master’s thesis. You can see both tracks on the UW Graduate School thesis and dissertation page.
The word thesis also reaches down to undergraduate level. Princeton is a long-standing example: its University Archives record that the senior thesis has been a requirement for Princeton undergraduates since 1926. Not every US master’s ends in a thesis, and our comparison of thesis, dissertation and capstone projects explains the alternatives.
For length, US practice varies by field and program rather than by national rule, so check your graduate school’s handbook. Our guide to how long a master’s thesis should be shows the typical ranges and how departments set them.
United Kingdom: dissertation for taught degrees, thesis for the doctorate
In the UK the doctorate is examined on a thesis. The QAA’s Doctoral Degree Characteristics Statement describes the final assessment as an assessment of the thesis followed by a closed oral examination, the viva, with two or even three examiners, and it states that at least one external examiner is required at each oral doctoral examination. It also notes that in more discursive subjects the thesis may be as long as 100,000 words, while a mathematics thesis can be relatively short. Only the candidate, the examiners and any independent chair or observer are normally present, which the QAA contrasts with the public defence used in some other European systems.
At master’s level the usual word is dissertation. The QAA’s Master’s Degree Characteristics Statement says most master’s degrees include a research project leading to a dissertation or other output, though not all do, and that research master’s degrees usually require a dissertation or thesis that is commonly defended in an oral examination. So a UK MRes student may legitimately use either word; follow the regulations of your own university.
Undergraduates in the UK commonly write a dissertation in their final year. If that is your stage, this breakdown of how long an undergraduate dissertation is in the UK covers the word counts to plan around. Canada: the answer depends on the university
Canada has no single national convention, so the same doctoral document has different names at different institutions. The University of British Columbia’s Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies office is explicit: it asks students to use dissertation if you are a doctoral student and thesis if you are a master’s student, which matches US usage. McGill’s Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies office, by contrast, addresses doctoral candidates writing their PhD thesis and guides them from initial submission to the final oral defence.
Because of that split, Canadian students should copy the terminology of their own graduate faculty rather than rely on habit. Formatting requirements differ just as much; this walkthrough of Canadian thesis format and title page layout covers what to check before you submit.
India: the PhD thesis under the UGC 2022 regulations
Indian doctoral work is governed nationally by the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022. After coursework, the scholar produces a draft dissertation or thesis and must present it to the Research Advisory Committee in a session open to faculty and other research scholars. The submitted thesis is then evaluated by the supervisor and at least two external examiners who are not employed by the institution, with one chosen from outside India wherever possible.
The viva-voce is held only if both external examiners recommend acceptance. The board consists of the supervisor and at least one of the external examiners, may be conducted online, and is open to faculty, research scholars and students. The whole evaluation, including the viva-voce result, is meant to be completed within six months of submission. The same regulations also state that institutions shall not offer the M.Phil. programme.
Below the doctorate, the vocabulary is set by each university. This explainer on thesis vs dissertation vs project report in India compares the three labels used at Indian institutions.
Nigeria: project, dissertation and thesis
Nigerian postgraduate regulations use all three words, each for a different level. Bayero University Kano’s General Regulations Governing Postgraduate Studies are a clear example. Postgraduate diploma programmes include long essays or research projects. An academic master’s involves a dissertation that is subject to oral examination by a panel that includes an external examiner, while a professional master’s involves a long essay or project that is not externally examined. PhD and M.Phil./PhD students write a thesis that is subject to both internal and external examination.
The difference is one of scale rather than kind. The University of Ilorin’s Postgraduate Handbook puts it plainly: although it is called a dissertation, the master’s document is no different from the PhD thesis in process and significance, except that it is shorter and carries 6 credit units.
At undergraduate level, the equivalent piece of work is usually called the final year project, and departments set their own formatting rules for it. This guide to Nigerian final year project format covers the title page, certification page and abstract.
South Africa: honours research, mini-dissertation, dissertation, thesis
South Africa defines its research documents in the national Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF), published by the Council on Higher Education. Under the 2013 text, a Bachelor Honours degree must include conducting and reporting research under supervision, worth at least 30 credits, as a discrete research component. The general master’s has two routes: a master’s by dissertation, built on a single advanced research project, and a master’s by coursework and mini-dissertation, whose research project must be worth at least 60 credits at NQF level 9. The doctorate, at NQF level 10 with a minimum of 360 credits, culminates in the submission, assessment and acceptance of a thesis.
The framework sets the structure but does not prescribe a name for the honours write-up, so what it is called varies between departments. If you are at that stage, this guide on how to write an honours research report takes you through the write-up step by step. Qualification rules are revised from time to time, so confirm the current requirement in your university yearbook.
Philippines: thesis for bachelor’s and master’s, dissertation for the doctorate
At the University of the Philippines, graduate usage follows the American split. The University of the Philippines Diliman College of Science Style and Format Manual for Thesis and Dissertations addresses students submitting a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation, and requires the document to be written in English or Filipino. After a successful defense and all revisions, the members of the Thesis Examination Committee sign the signature page of the final copy.
Undergraduates write theses too. The UP Diliman Institute of Biology’s Undergraduate Thesis Guidelines describe an individual thesis with an assigned examiner, an oral thesis proposal presentation and a final oral thesis presentation. Because an oral defense or presentation is built in at both levels, it pays to rehearse; this list of thesis defense questions in the Philippines helps you prepare for the panel.

Malaysia: project report, dissertation or thesis by programme mode
Malaysian universities such as UTM name the document after the way the degree is delivered. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s Thesis Writing Guidelines 2023 define a project report as the research component of a master’s by coursework, a dissertation as the document for a mixed-mode programme, and a thesis as the record of original research for a doctoral or research master’s degree. The same guidelines cap a master’s project report, dissertation or thesis at 200 pages and a doctoral thesis at 300 pages.
That means two Malaysian master’s students can write documents with different names in the same faculty. Undergraduates add a fourth label, the final year project. This comparison of FYP vs thesis vs dissertation in Malaysia compares the FYP with the thesis and the dissertation.
How to tell which document you are writing
When the vocabulary is confusing, four checks settle it quickly:
- Read your degree regulations, not a general guide. The term in your graduate school or faculty rules is the one examiners expect on the title page.
- Look at the template. Universities that separate the words, like UW and UBC, publish separate templates or wording for each level.
- Check the programme mode. In Malaysia, Nigeria and South Africa, coursework-heavy master’s degrees end in shorter documents with different names from research master’s degrees.
- Find out how it is examined. A closed viva, an open viva-voce and a public defense call for different preparation. Our thesis defense tips cover the common questions across formats.
Whatever the label, the core job is the same: a clearly argued, well-structured research document in your own words. That is the practical lesson of comparing thesis vs dissertation by country: moving between systems mostly changes the name, the length limit and the examination format.

FAQ
Is a dissertation longer than a thesis?
It depends on the country. In the US and the Philippines the dissertation is the doctoral document, so it is the longer one. In the UK, India, Nigeria and South Africa the doctorate ends in a thesis, so there the thesis is longer. At UTM in Malaysia, a doctoral thesis may run to 300 pages against 200 for master’s documents.
What is the difference between a thesis and a dissertation in the UK?
UK doctorates are examined on a thesis, followed by a closed viva with at least one external examiner. Taught master’s and undergraduate degrees usually end in a dissertation, and research master’s degrees may use either term.
Is a PhD a thesis or a dissertation?
A PhD is a dissertation in the US, the Philippines and at Canadian universities such as UBC. It is a thesis in the UK, India, Nigeria, South Africa and Malaysia, and at Canadian universities such as McGill.
What is a mini-dissertation in South Africa?
It is the research component of a master’s by coursework and mini-dissertation. Under the HEQSF, that research project must be worth at least 60 credits at NQF level 9, whereas the master’s by dissertation is built on a single advanced research project.
Which word should I use if I study abroad?
Use the word in your host university’s regulations and templates, not the one from your home country. Examiners and graduate offices check the title page against their own rules.
